The red and black bracelets are made from Jequirity beans which contain the toxin abrin. Abrin is a controlled substance under the Terrorism Act and is chemically similar to ricin, used in chemical warfare.
People who have bought the bracelets have been urged to bag them, to then wash their hands and avoid touching their eyes.
If chewed or consumed after being crushed or drilled into dust, the abrin seed can cause symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Even ingestion of small amounts of abrin can kill. Those who have ingested the seed have been urged to seek immediate medical attention.
