Martyn Prowel Gartsides offer a range of fixed fees to suit particular circumstances and these vary depending on whether Inheritance Tax ( IHT ) is payable by the estate .
In England and Wales, estates generally become taxable when their total value exceeds £325,000 (the “nil-rate band”). Above this threshold, Inheritance Tax (IHT) is typically charged at 40% on the excess.
The tax-free threshold can increase in specific situations:
- The Residence Nil-Rate Band: If you leave your main home to your direct descendants (like children or grandchildren), the threshold increases by up to £175,000, bringing the total tax-free amount to £500,000.
- Spouses and Civil Partners: Any unused threshold can be transferred to a surviving spouse or civil partner. This can raise their combined tax-free threshold up to £1,000,000

Our charges are based on the time spent dealing with a case. The fixed fee covers everything in our initial scope of work. Should unexpected complications arise and we have to spend more time working on the file than we originally envisaged to complete the work you have instructed us to undertake then we will give you details of what additional work is involved and provide an estimate of additional costs. We will do this before carrying out work beyond the initial fixed fee. We will never incur additional costs without discussing this with you first and obtaining your approval.
The Solicitor and Director of this Firm with final responsibility for work done in this department will be James Lynch.
