Olympic Cyclist Bradley Wiggins and the British Cycling Head Coach Shane Sutton have both been injured in collisions with vehicles in two separate accidents, just hours apart.
Both men were, thankfully, wearing their helmets which may just have saved their lives – Wiggins’ helmet was apparently smashed in the impact, and Sutton fell heavily on his head, suffering bruising and bleeding on the brain. One can only imagine the possible devastation that may have been caused if they were not wearing their helmets.
It is of great concern that many cyclists on Britain’s roads are seen taking unnecessary risks to their own health and safety, and ignoring the advice of the Highway Code. The Code sets out that cyclists “should wear:
• A cycle helmet which conforms to current regulations, is the correct size and securely fastened
• Appropriate clothes for cycling. Avoid clothes which may get tangled in the chain, or in a wheel or may obscure your lights
• Light-coloured or fluorescent clothing
• Reflective clothing and/or accessories in the dark”
Taking these simple steps can avoid accidents, and wearing a helmet can save your life!
Unfortunately, many cycling accidents are caused by other road users, and not the cyclists. In those circumstances, the cyclist is entitled to claim compensation against the other road user in respect of any injuries sustained.
Martyn Prowel Solicitors have a team of Specialist Personal Injury Solicitors who have helped many cyclists claim the compensation they deserve.
