The news has recently shown the prevalence of the issue of abuse to elderly people whether it be through care home scandals or companies and charities targeting and pressurising the elderly. With it shockingly being reported that in 2013-2014 that there were 14,888 incidents concerning the welfare of care home residents aged 65 and over. Should an elderly person be a victim of abuse they are entitled to seek compensation.
The type of abuse experienced by elderly people is varied and may include physical, sexual and mental abuse. This abuse may be at the hands of family members, friends, carers, medical professionals and others and may occur in a person’s home, carer’s home, hospital, day care centre or nursing home.
Another common form of abuse against the elderly is financial abuse. This may concern a person being pressurised into changing their will, forced to pay for services which they do not require or a victim of telemarketing scam or confidence trick.
The serious abuse experienced by elderly people is likely to give grounds not only for a civil claim for abuse compensation, it will also likely to be investigated by the police local council or hospital manager.
