If you, a close relative or a loved one have been an innocent victim of a violent crime you may be able to claim for compensation from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA).
Claims for compensation include instances where you personally have been injured physically or mentally as a result of a violent crime, where a close relative has died, where you have witnessed a crime happen to a loved one or have been present in the immediate aftermath, or you have paid for the funeral expenses for someone who has died.
It is important that any claim is submitted to the CICA within 2 years of the crime and it is essential that the crime has been reported to the Police. The crime must also have been committed in England, Scotland or Wales.
Once an application form has been submitted to the CICA, they will make their investigations which will include contacting the Police and also any medical professionals you have seen. At the end of their investigations, the CICA will decide whether an award of compensation can be made. The level of any award made by the CICA can vary from £1,000 to £500,000 depending on the nature and severity of the injuries.
